Harold K. "Ken" Barker

Harold Kenneth "Ken" Barker, 80, passed away in
Salt Lake City, Utah, on Saturday, March 3, 2007, where he lived with his son and family. Ken was born May 3, 1926, in Vienna, West "by God" Virginia, to Emery Marvin and Opal Trudeau Barker. He was the middle brother to Gart and Betty Barker. Ken spent his youth in Vienna, Parkersburg and Wick, W.Va. He graduated from Parkersburg High School and attended West Virginia University. Parkersburg High School won the state football championship while he was team fullback. Ken served honorably in the Army. He was a World War II veteran serving in Korea. When he returned from the service in 1947, he began his employment with Corning Glass in Parkersburg and continued for a lifetime career working more than 35 years with Corning. He traveled to over 100 countries during his work as a project manager for Corning International. His career led him to travel the world and do what he did best, get a job completed, make friends, eat exotic foods and make his presence known wherever he was. Ken never met a "stranger" and left a lasting impression. Ken will be remembered as Corning's "Buddha." Ken was a wonderful father and traveled extensively with his son to pursue his passion of motorcycling. He loved all motorcycling events and all the people attending. He enjoyed telling hundreds of stories about his travels around the globe. After his retirement with Corning, he lived in Painted Post, N.Y., for a few years and then he moved to Salt Lake City, Utah with his favorite traveling companion, his dog Belle, to be close to "his boy," Joe. Ken helped Joe with his construction business and ran his crews in the same manner as he did with Corning. His style, humor and personality were truly "one of a kind." Ken and Joe traveled collecting antique motorcycles. Ken always loved an adventure and in his normal fashion made a large group of friends in the motorcycle community. During his retirement years, he enjoyed collecting motorcycles and spoiling his grandchildren. Ken has two grandchildren that he absolutely adored and spoiled rotten. Colby and Mary loved their grandpa "pea head" and knew if dad or mom said no, they could count on grandpa saying yes, and coming through with whatever they wanted. Colby and Mary will always remember their grandpa's funny sayings, his generosity and the pride and love he had for them. He is survived by his son and wife (his favorite daughter-in-law, the only one), Joe and Sheril Barker; grandchildren, Colby and Mary Barker; nieces and nephews, Tom, Carol and Peggy Moore and families, Patty and Bill Releford and family, Larry and Terressa Barker and family, Lavina and Mitch Ellis and family, Butchie and Sue Evans and family; and countless friends from around the globe. In addition to his parents, Ken was preceded in death by his brother, Gart; and sister, Betty Moore. We love you Dad, we will miss you, but we will never forget you! Thank you for your guidance, love, generosity, and humor. You were "one of a kind!" Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at the Ingram Funeral Home, St. Mary's, with Evangelist Tom Butterfield officiating. Graveside services will be 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the McKim Cemetery, Tyler County, W.Va. Calling hours will be from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday and from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Sad Death, Emmet Barker

Emmet. the ten year old son of Mrs. Simon Barker, died of heart failure Saturday. He was troubled with enlarged tonsils, and they were being removed by Drs. A.P. and Lattimer Jones. Only enough chloroform was administered to keep him from struggling, and the operation had barely began when it was found he was not sufficiently anesthetized. The mouth gag was removed and the boy had taken but two or three whiffs of the chloroform-administered by Dr. A.P. Jones. When his heart stopped. An examination had disclosed that his heart was apparently normal. No one is in any wise to blame; it is just one of those unfortunate cases so frequent in surgery. It will be recalled that the boy’s father was killed a few years ago in an accident on a saw mill and an older brother was accidentally shot last fall while shooting at a mark and considerably hurt. The little fellow was the grandson of the aged James Barker and of Noah Farley and wife. We extend our sincere sympathy to the bereft.
