Ruth Greathouse
Ruth Elizabeth Bramhall Greathouse, age 89, died
on April 1, 2008, at the New Martinsville Healthcare in New Martinsville,
WV. She was born on July 30, 1918, in Middlebourne, the fourth child
of Bird Forest "Bert" and Georgia Jane
(Lamp) Bramhall. She was preceded in death by her
husband in 1966, Thomas Eugene Greathouse, whom she
married in Catlettsburg, KY on May 8, 1965. She is the last surviving member
of her immediate family. Her siblings were Charles Emery Bramhall
of Alliance, Ohio who was raised by a (related) foster family (James & Isadore Leach King) who also fostered Georgia in Middlebourne; and Chester and Lawrence Bramhall,
Weirton; and Helen (Ted) Steede, Alliance, Ohio. Surviving
are nephews & nieces, James Everett (Sharon) Bramhall,
North
Olmsted, OH, Betty Bramhall
(William E.) Morrison, Alliance, OH; Patricia Bramhall;
Randal L. Bramhall, and Darlene Bramhall,
as well as dear friends, Mr. and Mrs. David (Connie) Koon
of New Martinsville. The Bramhalls were members of
the East Street M.E. Church (now Middlebourne Methodist Church).
A serious childhood illness left Ruth with an altered mental capacity,
but throughout Ruth's lifetime, heaven always seemed to provide kind neighbors
and friends who gave assistance along the way. This speaks well of West Virginia hearts. After her father's death in 1958, Ruth Bramhall and her mother continued to live at the family
cottage overlooking the creek in Middlebourne - a house which always abounded
in flowers. A large vegetable garden, spread across their large plot of land,
was faithfully tended. She lived the majority of her adult life with her
mother, Georgia Bramhall.
Ruth & Georgia were well-known for their ability to walk great distances.
They were familiar figures along the roadways in and around Middlebourne,
attired in dresses, hats, and tennis shoes. Neighbors or passersby regularly
offered them rides. Following her
mother's death in 1977, Ruth sold the homeplace and
moved to New Martinsville where she spent the last 30 years of her life. It was
here that she came into her own. Like her mother, she kept her house as neat as
a pin. Perhaps because she had no children of her own, Ruth developed a hobby
of collecting dolls and filled every room with them. As in Middlebourne, Ruth
became a beloved fixture in town, walking everywhere she went – yard sales,
church functions, stores, and restaurants. Many times soft- hearted folks
picked up her tab after restaurant meals. When she became a senior citizen -
she also became a regular at the senior center lunch table, taking the free
shuttle service. When she became too feeble to live alone, a kindly neighbor,
Mrs. David (Connie) Koon, who had since taken Ruth
under her angel wing, graciously assumed the role of medical power of attorney
and gave her assistance in moving into the New Martinsville HealthCare Center.
The Bramhall family would like to thank Connie
and David Koon and family of New Martinsville for
providing Ruth with so much love, counsel, thoughtfulness, and presence these
many years, the staff at New Martinsville Healthcare for their tender care, the
Senior Center and several churches who transported her for meals, Hospice - who
tended her in her last illness, as well as David Furbee
of the Furbee Funeral Home. It seems as though Ruth
has been blessed with angels all along her road in life. May God grant her a
golden path upon which to walk once again with her beloved mother and father,
sister and brothers.
Friends will be received at the Furbee Funeral Home,
Middlebourne 12:00 - 2:00 pm Friday April 4, 2008. Funeral service to begin at 2:00
pm. Interment in Middlebourne Cemetery.
