John M. Hammel 77 0f Middlebourne departed this life Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2008 in New Martinsville Health  Care Center. He was born Aug. 31 , 1931.  in New Martinsville a son of the late Andy and Ella  Nolen Hammel. John was retried employee of AIRCO Newell, W. VA. He was a Untied States Army Veteran. He attended the Middlebourne Baptist Church. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Emma Flecther Hammel in 2003; and two sisters, Ruth Anderson and Maxine Miller. John is survived by three daughters, Barbra Grove and her husband Steve of East Liverpool, Ohio, Brenda Oyster and her husband Tim of Apopka, Fla. and Kathy Tudor and her husband Mike  of East Liverpool Ohio.; two sisters, Irona Amos and Nila Cross both of New Martinsville; and ten grandchildren . Friends were received at Furbee Funeral Home from 2 - 4 and 7-9 on Monday. Jan. 5 , 2009 where services were held at 1pm.Jan.6 2009 with the Reverend Steve Delay officiating. Interment was in Middlebourne Cemetery.



Olive
E. Hammond

Hammond, Olive E., 77, of
101 Eddy Lane, Pursley Community, Sistersville, died Jan. 29, 1998 at the Sistersville General Hospital, Sistersville. She was born in Pursley on May 1, 1920 the daughter of Melvin and Fay Barker Wagner. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death in addition to her parents by one brother, Otis Wagner. Surviving are her husband, Woodrow L. Hammond; two sons, Roger Hammond of Hannibal, Ohio and Kenneth Hammond of Sistersville; one brother, Layman Wagner of Canton, Ohio; three grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Friends were received at Myers Funeral Home in Sistersville on Jan. 31. Services were held Feb. 1 at the funeral home with the Reverend Roger Yost officiating. Interment in Greenwood Cemetery in Sistersville.



Woodrow L. Hammond

Woodrow L. Hammond, 90, of
Sistersville, W.Va., passed away Monday, Feb. 2, 2009, at Wetzel County Hospital. He was born Feb. 24, 1918, in Pennsboro, W.Va., a son of the late John and Mary Ferrell Hammond. He worked 34 years for W.Va. Department of Highways. He was a World War II Army veteran in the 1st Cavalry Division and was awarded the Purple Heart.  He is survived by sons, Roger Hammond of Clarington, Ohio, and Kenneth Hammond of Sistersville, Pursley Community, W.Va.; sister, Opal Yonley, of Parkersburg, W.Va.; four granddaughters; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Olive E. Wagner Hammond; brothers, Foy Hammond and Forrest Hammond; and sisters, Loy Skeels, Dorotha Hammond and Nellie Whitehair. Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, 2009 at the Myers Funeral Home, 600 Main Street, Sistersville, WV with Evangelist Homer Matthews officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Sistersville. Friends may call from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.


 

Charles Milton Hamilton

Charles married Rosa Cenora Darnell on
August 22, 1901 in Middlebourne, Tyler County, West Virginia. She was the daughter of George Henry Darnell and Lavina Josephine Kendall.

Golda M. Hamilton

Golda M. Hamilton, 95, of
Green Bay, Wisc., and formerly of Pennsboro died Sept 23 in Green Bay. She was born Feb 19, 1903, at Mountain, Ritchie County, to the late Jerry and Harriet Stull Dawson. She was a homemaker and cleaned houses. She enjoyed quilting and was a member of Pennsboro Church of Christ. She is survived by three daughters, Virginia Hadley of Columbus, Orph Frazier of Green Bay and Dorothy M. McDougal of Sistersville; one son, Cecil Hamilton of St. Mary’s; 22 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; and II great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by husbands Walter Duty and John Hamilton; five brothers; three sisters; and two grandsons. Services were Monday at McCullough-Rogers Funeral Home in Pennsboro with Evangelist Terry Jones officiating. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery in Tyler County.



Eileen Gertrude Hartley

Eileen Gertrude Hartley, 90, of
Yanceyville, NC, formerly of Alvy, WV departed this life Monday, February 4, 2008 in Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation Home, Yanceyville, NC. She was born in Tyler County May 26, 1917 a daughter of the late Thomas and Elizabeth Burnside Wharton. Eileen was a homemaker and a member of the Alvy Church of Christ, Alvy, WV. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Franklin Hartley. Five brothers and two sisters. She is survived by four sons; Thomas A. Hartley, Sistersville, Rick L. Hartley, Coal Center, PA, Ronald F. Hartley, Bentleyville, PA and Mark A. Hartley, Olive Branch, MS. A daughter Judy L. Walters, Providence, NC. Sixteen grandchildren, twenty three great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren. Friends will be received at the Furbee Funeral Home, Rt. 18, Tyler, Alma, WV 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 pm Thursday where services will be held 1:00 pm Friday with Evangelist Roy Dawson officiating. Interment in Victory Cemetery, Alma.



Arthur H. Haught
1913- 2006

           
Arthur Harold "Pete" Haught, age 93 died
Dec. 17 2006. in Illinois. He was born in 1913 in Middlebourne, to parents Mary F. Bickerstaff and Harvey Haught . He graduated from Tyler County High School. In 1932. He attended Potomac State College. Now a University, and was a student council president. He went on to West Virginia University and earned a BS degree in electrical engineering. Pete started his life’s career as a designer and draftsman with the Celanese Company of America in Cumberland, Md. He spent the rest of his working years with West Virginia Pulp & Paper Mill (Westvaco) in Luke Md. He served in WWII with Company D of the 331st Infantry all through Francis and Germany and Belgium campaigns. After holding every enlisted man's rank in the Army from Private to Tech. Sgt. he advanced a step further in the ranks and was awarded a battlefield commission as a second Lieutenant. He was very proud of that honor and was later a Major in the Army Reserves. Pete also received a Bronze Star Medal and a Sliver Star Medal both for valor .He was extremely proud of the fact that he received a Good Conduct medal. Officer normally does not qualify for the Good Conduct Medal but Pete was enlisted before being commissioned, Pete was a Boy Scout Leader and during the Depression served time in the Civil Conservation Corps. Was a Mason of the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels He married Elizabeth Brinks "Betty " Morris and that marriage ended with her death in 1985. He was also preceded in death by his parent’s one sister and three brothers. He is survived by his wife Margaret "Peg" Lanham; a stepdaughter Diana Jameson and her husband Dick of Illinois; and four siblings Art Claire Haugth of Middlebourne, Isabelle Kannan of New Matamoras. Ohio, Ida Trolan of Baltimore, Md. and her twin sister Ona Robertson of Irving Texas. Pete and Peg resided at Lely Palm in Naples, Fla. Services will be held at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C.


 
Robert Hickman

Robert G. Hickman 78 of Middlebourne departed this life Jan.17, 2009 in Cademn Clark Memorial  Hospital Parkersburg. He was born Oct.17,1930 in Tyler County a son of the late David S. and Clara G Stewart Hickman. Bob was a retried employee of Mobay Natrium. WV. He was a U.S. Army Veteran having served during the Korean Conflict. Bob was a member of the Middlebourne Methodist Church. In addition to his parents he was perceded in death by two brothers; Victor and Virgil. Two sisters Roma Ash, and Francis Westbrook. Bob is survived by his wife Mary Alice Ash Hickman, Three sons Mark D. Hickman and his wife Karen, Fort Ashby ,WV. Michael D. Hickman and his wife Connie  of Middlebourne. And Dana E. Hickman of Middlebourne . A sister Nila  Owens of Middlebourne. Six grandchildren. Friends will be received at the Furbee Funeral Home Middlebourne Tuesday, Jan 20, 2009 2 - 4 and 7- 9 pm. services will be held Wednesday ,Jan21 ,2009 10:00am. With Reverend Dennis Mehaffie officiating, Interment in Beechwood Cemetery, Alma. The family requests that lieu of flowers donations may be made to the charity of your choice.


 

Howard H. Hill

Councilman dies at 71: Howard H. Hill, 71, of Sistersville died
November 14, 1996 at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital, Parkersburg. He was a member of the Sistersville First United Methodist Church, a WW II Army Air Corp Veteran, and retired from PPG Industries, New Martinsville. He was a member of the BPOE #333, Sistersville; VFW Post 6327, Sistersville; and American Legion Post 67, Sistersville. At the time of his death he was a Sistersville City Councilman. He was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Martha Roberts Hill. He is survived by his wife, Martha Jean Johnson Hill; one daughter; Theresa Drain of Sistersville; his stepmother, Charlotte Zinn Hill of Dayton, Ohio; two sisters, Frances Webb of Sistersville and Joyce Gerber of Brandenton, Fl; one grandson, Craig Drain of Arlington, Va; one granddaughter, Debra Drain of Sistersville. Services were held Saturday, November 16, 1996 at Myers Funeral Home, Sistersville. An Elks Memorial Service was held Friday, November 15, 1996. Interment in Greenwood Cemetery, Sistersville.


 
Mary May
Hamilton

 

Mary May Hamilton was born and died in Mole Hill (McKim) Tyler Co., West Virginia. Mary's death was reported as stillbirth, however, her brother Bob who was three years old at the time, reported that he remembered hearing her cry.

Carol Green Barkwill Howard born
Dec. 21, 1925 in St. Mary’s WVa. to Eugene I. Green and Estelle Houser Green died at Sistersville General Hospital on Jan.2 , 2009 at age 83. She was preceded in death by her Aunts Bonnie Green, and Gladys Deering; her first husband Lt. Col. James Barkwill her second husband Harold L. Howard and her middle son John V. Barkwill. She is survived by her sons , Brooks K. Barkwill and James W. Barkwill II. step son Jeff Howard and step daughter Debbie Metz three grandchildren and four step grandchildren. A private graveside ceremony and interment will be conducted by Jarvis Funeral Home. at the 1.0.0.F Cemetery in St. Mary’s on Jan.5, 2009 at 1pm. In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America.

Howard Leroy Hutson

 

Howard LeRoy Hutson, 41, of R.D. 1, Middlebourne, died Friday on the West Virginia Turnpike near Beckley.  He was en employee of the Beagle Lumber co. of Middlebourne.  He is survived by his mother, Goldie Steffy Everhart of Clinton, Ind., two brothers, Danny of Lafayette, Ind., and Larry of Bicknel, Ind.; six sisters, Betty McGill and Norma Jean Jasper both of Terre Haute, Ind.; Mary Rowe of Columbus; Kathy Brown of Rockville, Ind., Sue Hudson of Lafayette, Ind., and Joanne Kelly of Waynesville, N.C.  Funeral services will be held at the Barnes Mortuary, Rockville, Ind. at a time convenient for the family.  Local arrangements by the Goodwin Funeral Home Middlebourne.

Vala Beulah Hutson

 

Vala Beula Hutson, 50, of R.D. 1 Middlebourne, was killed Friday on the West Virginia Turnpike near Beckley.  She was employed by the Colin-Anderson Childrens Center, St. Marys.  She is survived by three brothers, Carl Pethtel of New Castle, Pa.; Harrison Tethtel of Kent, Ohio and Hale Pethtel of Akron, Ohio; three sisters, Phyllis Shingleton and Belinda Carroll of Northville, Ohio and Margaret Hall of New Cumberland.  Friends received at the Goodwin Funeral Home, Middlebourne.

 

Services were held Tuesday at 2 p.m.  Interment in the Lawson Chapel Cemetery near Middlebourne.
